Russia: Yeysk port can redirect to sugar transshipment

The governing body of the Yeysk affiliated branch of Federal State Unitary Enterprise informed about the beginning of reconstruction of the port Yeysk which purpose is increase of annual cargo flow from the current 4 mln to 7 mln tonnes.

According to the estimations of independent experts, total cost of reconstruction of Yeysk port can be $120-130 bln. One of the investors of the project can be SC “Dominant” (large sugar trader).

The experts agree that development of the port as a specialized complex is more effective, however, they note that the shallow Azov Sea will make sugar transshipment difficult as the main direction.

Yeysk sea port is located on the south coast of Taganrog Bay of the Azov Sea. Arrival of the vessels to the port Yeysk is carried out along an entrance canal by 1.2 miles length, 80 m width. The assured width of the entrance canal, inner harbor is 4.2 m. 6 stevedoring companies work in the harborage.

Total number of ports is 13, total length of all berths – 1650 m. In 2007 cargo flow of the port was 4 mln tones. In the first quarter of 2008 cargo flow totaled 736.600 tonnes (reduction by 30% compared to the same period of 2007).
